Smoky, lonesome lyrics, brooding cowboy lyrics, and waltzing Wurlitzers — all in all, a beautiful downer of an album.

  • We Say...

“Alt-country” is just another word for “inauthentic,” so why the hell is Seattle singer-songwriter Rocky Votolato so skilled with the warble and the twang? Ah: "born and raised in Texas." Okay, carry on, sir, with your brooding cowboy melodies and waltzing Wurlitzers. Keep dropping smoky, lonesome lyrics about ghost trains, lost loves and regret, regret, regret. Like a faithful sidekick, a kindly harmonica follows Votolato around The Brag and Cuss, echoing his somber sighs and seconding his emotions. Yeah, this album’s mostly a beautiful downer, just like 2006’s whiskey-soaked indie-folk opus Makers, but it’s got a few peppy travel songs — “Before You Were Born” is super-catchy — to keep you looking for a sunset to ride of into.
