Rope's debut album, a six-song, 55-minute foray into experimental rock, is also pretty par for the course for the Bloomington, IN-based Family Vineyard record label. The focus of the album is on a life weighed down by its failures and loss, and the music certainly complements that to a great degree. Robert Iwanik's hissing, phantom-like vocals complement the obscure nature of the music, at times making for an eerie, ambient sound. Between the times of ambience, the band jams out in a serious, Chicago-styled math rock fashion, then quickly rolls its sound back toward the obtuse and otherworldly. With such a unique take on music, it's no surprise that Steve Albini was called upon to record the band, as he's no doubt one of the few people who would be able to accurately pin down a band of this style. Widow's First Dawn is definitely not an album for everyone and most likely only fans of experimental music will appreciate it, although fans of Chicago math rock may dig it, as long as they also have an ear for the opaque, too.
