  • They Say...

From Chicago to Shreveport: Deep Soul, Vol. 1 attempts to round up some of the style's more remembered practitioners along with some of their better songs. It's disappointing not to see some of the more popular crossover artists like Aretha Franklin or Otis Redding featured. However, there's no shortage of highlights here despite the lack of big names. You get classic songs like "C.C. Rider" and classic performers like Little Johnny Taylor. Furthermore, by eschewing more obvious deep soul artists like Franklin and Redding, this collection goes out of its way to familiarize you with some of the more obscure artists from the golden age of deep soul. An educational listen sure to inspire further investigation.
