  • They Say...

After two albums which saw them exploring the more commercial aspects of their sound (without ever going so far as to lose their way, mind you), Greece's favorite sons Rotting Christ decided to scale back a bit and resurrect the ferocious brutality of their black metal origins for 2000's Khronos. In a welcome reverse shift in direction, the entire band's performance -- but especially vocalist Sakis' demonic grunts -- pulsates with attitude and aggression, while managing to retain all the lessons learned during their recent discovery period. The album therefore caters to all fans by spanning every phase of the band's career: from the slower, more melodically inclined aspirations of "Art of Sin" and the title track, to the total thrashing assault of "Thou Art Blind" and "Aeternatus," and with numerous excellent offerings between the two extremes (reminiscent of their best work, 1996's Triarchy of the Lost Lovers) like "If It Ends Tomorrow," "My Sacred Path," and "Fateless." The only noticeable blunder arrives with the uncharacteristically goofy lyrics of "Lucifer Over London," but it's safe to let that slide since few will purchase this album for its lyrical content anyway."
