  • They Say...

Released five years after Royal City's final show, this career retrospective collects various B-sides, covers, and unreleased songs into one package. Royal City: 1999-2004 may be a fans-only affair, but it's also an appropriate conclusion to the band's duration, featuring 12 tracks of dusky alt country songcraft and earnest vocals. The insight into the band's back catalog is interesting, and the album's most attractive features -- spirited cover renditions of Iggy Pop's "Here Comes Success" and the Strokes' "Is This It?" -- showcase the band's ability to turn patently non-country material into something twangy and fun. There was always a sense of excitement running beneath Royal City's autumnal sound, and this album highlights that undercurrent one final time.
