A virtuoso work dedicated to Andres Segovi, full of lively folk rhythms and colors.

  • We Say...

Henryk Szeryng, a celebrated Polish-born Mexican violinist who died in 1988, left behind a huge recorded legacy, most of it standard repertoire. But one of the most interesting gems in his catalogue is Ponce’s 1943 Violin Concerto, a work that Szeryng premiered with the Symphony Orchestra of Mexico. Although rarely heard today, the virtuosic piece includes several catchy tunes including Ponce’s 1912 hit song “Estrelita,” which turns up in the slow movement. The Piano Concerto, a much earlier work, dating from 1910, shows how Ponce was the first Mexican composer to bring Mexican nationalist elements into his music. Those elements are found in even greater supply in the 1941 “Concerto of the South” for guitar. Dedicated to Andres Segovia, it is a virtuoso work, full of lively folk rhythms and colors. It is no wonder that Segovia once called Ponce, “probably the best composer for the guitar."
