  • They Say...

Usually reserved for performing on Kit Clayton's outstanding Musork imprint, Andy Dixon steps out for a moment to deliver this stunningly hysterical EP for the ever-emerging Ache imprint. Similar in spirit to musical colleagues Blectum from Blechdom, Nathan Michel, and the Rip Off Artist, Hawaii 5.0 brilliantly observes the culture of Hawaii in a five-song cycle and then feeds it with an unforgiving tenacity into a Max/MSP patch to delivery something that is just as funky as it is off the cuff. Sliced-up steel drums, illegally lifted "Ipanema" samples, seagull squawks, field recordings in pineapple mazes, and glitched-out pedal steel moments run amuck in this 20-minute exercise in laptop blanket bingo. It's the soundtrack of Frankie and Annette had they grown up in Silicon Valley, and there is no doubt that Hawaii 5.0 will please just about any IDM fan who worships at the altars of Musork and Tigerbeat6. Surf's up.
