  • We Say...

Made up of a post-punk A-list — former members of Gang Of Four (bassist Dave Allen), XTC (keyboard molester Barry Andrews) and Out On Blue Six (singer/guitarist Carl Marsh) — Shriekback had the vision and talent to be as influential as the parent bands from which they arrived. The fact that they didn't is positively reprehensible. This writer defies you to sit still during "My Spine (Is the Bassline)," with its greasy thumb-slapping bass, the rhythmic torrents put forth by drummer Martyn Barker and percussionist Pedro Ortiz, and Andrews' fondness for wind-powered toys. What does influential British remixer Andrew Weatherall — who used this track on his 11 O'Clock Drop mix disc — know that you don't?
