  • We Say...

His Name Is Alive leader Warn Defever calls this 2001 album "simple make-out R&B." More accurately, the Livonia, Michigan, band's breakthrough record is simple make-out R&B as defined by 4AD's most artistically restless signing: There's plenty of acoustic guitar, nocturnal keyboards, low-key beats, real strings, a touch of TLC and a knockout performance from Lovetta Pippen, a Detroit runaway Defever discovered in a gospel choir that appeared on 1997's Nice Day EP. Defever is clearly musically smitten with Pippen — his sparse arrangements and supple songs come across as an extended love letter, and Pippen reciprocates on tracks like "Write My Name In the Groove" by caressing each note with an inflection subtly different from the one before. Imagine mainstream soul freed from commercial considerations. Now imagine something even better. That's this album.
