They Say...
On Just Blues, Sonny Rhodes delivers danceable soul blues featuring punchy horns and strong vocals, but not nearly enough of his lap steel guitar playing. Rhodes' lap steel playing is grittiest on "Please Me." A number of covers are included: "The Things I Used to Do," "Strange Things Happening," and "It Hurts Me Too." You get the impression if this session would have been recorded live in front of an audience, the end results would have been much different. Just Blues is enjoyable, but non-essential.
