  • They Say...

This does include some of the Soul Children's hits, like "Don't Take My Kindness for Weakness" and "It Ain't Always What You Do." But this compilation is really geared toward serious soul collectors and Stax hounds, collecting material from singles, B-sides, and the Wattstax concert (including three tracks from 1978, after the original Stax operation had shut down). Most will be hard pressed to link the group with a sharp personality or consistent approach; it's just, like much of Stax's early-'70s material, OK soul. Sometimes it sounds like it wants a piece of Motown's action ("Ridin' On Love's Merry-Go-Round" has some Jackson Five influence in the production). It's best when the vocals (which were shared by all Soul Children) get a bit raw and gospel-toned, as on "All That Shines Ain't Gold." The nearly seven-minute version of "Hearsay" is not the original Top Five R&B hit recording, but their performance of the tune at Wattstax, with plenty of back-and-forth testifying.
