  • They Say...

Almost two decades down the line, house music enjoys a wide latitude of producers and music that could actually be construed as house, from Larry Heard to Paul Oakenfold to Terrence Parker. On this three-disc box set, the Hypnotic subsidiary of Cleopatra Records (a.k.a. dance music's worst enemy) attempts to mislead buyers into thinking the label has cornered the market on house music. Of course, as with their similar attempts concerning trance, Kraut-rock and several other dance styles, the results are insulting to listeners, dangerous to those who want to know what house music is all about, and above all, downright ludicrous and musically appalling. The first disc presents disco covers by Cleopatra-related producers including Astralasia, Transmutator, cathexis, THC, Asda and Distant Voices. Besides the novelty value, there isn't much else to recommend it. The final two discs consist of a good 20 unheard-of producers making derivative house. One of the few redeeming qualities comes with "Sirens" [sic] by System 7, included with a rare remix by original housemaster Marshall Jefferson. Avoid.
