  • They Say...

Big Bender Records issues its first artist sampler on Seven Dead Roses, Vol. 1. This is country with a capital "C" -- even if it does engage some hybrid sounds -- and for the most part it rocks. The label focuses on the more authentic sounds of country music than many of the more "progressive" Americana slugs out there. The set 's high points are the rambling, nocturnal, even spooky "Elysian Fields" from Ash Ganley & the Lyons Rock Council, though "rock" it ain't. Clint Clymer's "It's All About the Ride" could have been cut by Tompall Glaser in his glorious outlaw days; then there's the stomping bluegrass of "Arkansas River" by Oakhurst. It isn't Ralph Stanley or Bill Monroe, but it's got balls and high lonesome. The cowpunk of the Shitkickers "Burn It Down" could have been left off, but with a name like that you get what you pay for. The faux Flying Burrito Brothers harmonies with the instrumental acumen of the Munks offset their dumb lyrics on "Believe," which closes the set. In all, this baby is good, if not great listening and well-worth investigating.
