We Say...
Stax is best remembered as Motown’s greatest rival, the record company that put Otis Redding, Albert King, Sam and Dave and Carla Thomas on the map, and the only American studio that both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones tried to book. But if Stax was never quite the same after Atlantic Records impresarios Ahmet Ertegun and Jerry Wexler severed their relationship with the label (and seized control of its catalogue), it certainly didn’t go down the drain. This fifteen-track collection culls the best of the label’s late '60s and early '70s output. Songs by the Staple Singers, Isaac Hayes, Jean Night and the Dramatics rival anything Stax put out in its mid-'60s heyday. The Otis Redding number — an alternate version of "Try a Little Tenderness" — is simply priceless.
