  • They Say...

This CD features the great soprano saxophonist in a trio (instead of his usual sextet), interacting with bassist Jean-Jacques Avenel and drummer John Betsch; Irene Aebi has two brief vocal appearances. Lacy performs seven of his better originals (including "The Bath" and "The Hoot") plus a song by Avenel and two Thelonious Monk tunes ("Bye-Ya" and "Trinkle Tinkle"). Lacy, who excels in all settings, sounds perfectly at home in this sparse trio. Avenel adds a bit of variety by switching to his eerie-sounding kora on "Pi-Pande." A recommended set of adventurous yet thoughtful music.
