  • They Say...

Yeah, they were a cartoon band, with all the vocals and instruments provided behind the scenes by studio veterans, but that doesn't mean that everything that hit the streets in the 1960s under the Archies name was disposable, even though, by definition, it was. The big hit "Sugar, Sugar," which is included here, is a perfect example. Simple, infectious, and hinting at adult themes without really going there, it was everything bubblegum pop was supposed to be and it remains one of the best guilty-pleasure singles in the history of AM radio. This set includes mostly tracks from the Archies' second album, 1969's Everything's Archie (which is where "Sugar, Sugar" is from), but does touch lightly on the other albums issued under the Archies moniker. There are more complete single-disc sets on the market, but a little goes a long way with Archie, Jughead, and the gang, so this one may well be plenty for most listeners.
