For anyone unfamiliar with the strange and wondrous Supersilent, this is the place to start.

  • We Say...

There is something odd about singling out one Supersilent album as the "best," since the Norwegian quartet's work is so relentlessly abstract and process-oriented. Their music is completely improvised, but unlike much jazz, they also take pains to de-emphasize personality; numbers-only song titles and austere packaging never betray intention. They leave the listener with only pure sound — whatever happened to be recorded in the studio on a given day — which makes objective assessment difficult.

That said, and with all due respect to the band's methodology, 6 may well be the best Supersilent album. It's certainly the collection that presents the most rounded and complete picture of the band, nicely delineating the rather wide boundaries of the project. Just about everything Supersilent do well is in here somewhere, from the spacey synthesizer exploration bent on conjuring images of an alien world ("6.1") to a moody near-jazz ambiance spotlighting the airy trumpet of Arve Henriksen ("6.2") to a piece that, despite its drifting, formless nature, manages a certain lyricism ("6.6," with its gorgeous, gamelan-like tumble of piano notes and Henriksen's wordless vocals and whistles).

Missing only is a rumbling rhythm showcase for drummer Jarle Vespestad, best exemplified by the epic "1.1," from the band's debut album; even so, the impressive drama of "6.4," which starts quietly and builds to an almost unbearably intense peak, makes up for it. For anyone unfamiliar with the strange and wondrous Supersilent, this is the place to start.
