The seasoned, sassy Louisiana pianist flashes her considerable blues chops

  • We Say...

The Louisiana pianist came loaded for bear with her sassy Alligator debut, which in the late '80s gave her a comeback as a solo artist whose bluesy soul was deeply felt whether meant for good times or bad. (She'd previously been a regular on the swamp blues circuit until Otis Redding made her his opening act and the pianist in her band; following his death she left music to look after her parents, and her initial comeback albums attracted little attention.) Here, her Louisiana roots shine through on "Sea of Love" (she'd played on Phil Phillips' original hit), and she repays a debut to Otis with her assured remakes of "Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song)" and "Try a Little Tenderness," not the two easiest songs in Redding's repertoire to claim as one's own. She also sashays through the instrumental "Black Satin" with élan, and flashes knowing blues chops with "After You Get Rid of Me," her title for Charlie Rich's "Who Will the Next Fool Be"). Among the guest stars, who are used discretely, Kim Wilson duets with her on Johnnie Taylor's "Who's Making Love?," with Robert Cray on guitar. But it's her own seasoned vocals and stout, boogie-flavored pianistics that carry this album.

  • They Say...

Lovable Katie Webster had some high-profile help for this impressive comeback album -- Bonnie Raitt shares the vocal on "Somebody's on Your Case" and plays guitar on "On the Run"; Kim Wilson duets with Webster for a cover of Johnnie Taylor's "Who's Making Love" (a track that Robert Cray contributes crisp guitar to). Throughout, Webster's vocals are throatier than they used to be (she soulfully covers one-time mentor Otis Redding's "Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa [Sad Song]" and "Try a Little Tenderness"), while her driving left hand still lays down some powerhouse boogie rhythms.
