  • We Say...

Newcomers to Syl Johnson inevitably wonder why he never achieved the crossover success of contemporaries like Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett and Joe Tex. It certainly wasn't for lack of talent or quality material; with a voice like a high-pitched, more vulnerable Pickett, Johnson waxed some of the finest raw soul singles to ever come out of Chicago. Though Johnson's later work for Hi Records is more widely known, it simply doesn't come close to the low-down, visceral punch of the sides he recorded for the Twinight label during the '60s and early '70s. Twinight Chicago Soul collects 17 Syl singles from that period, including such boogaloo classics as "Dresses Too Short," "I'll Take Those Skinny Legs" and "Come on Sock It to Me," as well as heartbreaking message tracks like "Is It Because I'm Black" and "Concrete Reservation." It's a stone-cold must-have for any aficionado of classic soul.
