  • We Say...

Sliding in completely under-the-radar, France's Wax Tailor offers one of the year's most surprising and engaging records. Summoning both RJD2's Deadringer as well as RZA's soundtrack for the Jim Jarmusch film Ghost Dog, Tales of the Forgotten Melodies is a dank, tense, humid record full of static and snatches of old 45s. "Que Sera" revolves around a single, simple soul sample, the kind of hypnotic bobbing bassline that fueled classic soul ballads. "Am I Free" is music from another planet, full of sci-fi whistles and weird cathode rays.Melodies is terrifically spooky — like someone scraped Beth Gibbons' vocals off some lost Portishead album. A consistent, terrific surprise.
