  • We Say...

Romania is home to the world's largest Roma population, and Taraf de Haidouks are 12 intergenerational Romani musicians from the village of Clejani. First recorded after the fall of Ceausescu, the group won international acclaim for this collection of ballads and whirlwinding newer songs recorded less ethnographically and more like a professional jazz ensemble. The Taraf combine vocal and instrumental tracks with accordions, fiddle, bouncing bass and the distinctive Roma-sound of the cimbalom (a mallet-struck dulcimer) on local material along with international Romani and folk music, often with a tell-tale Turkish modal flare.
