Thoughtful improvisation and solid tone make Edwards one of the best
-
We Say...
One of the first and best of the bop tenor sax players, Teddy Edwards was already recording the music in the mid '40s, and his conception continued to evolve in the '50s and '60s. On this 1966 album, he employs a post-bop style that seems to have been influenced by Sonny Rollins. He's accompanied by a rhythm section that includes a guitarist, a Latin percussionist and the gifted pianist Walter Davis, Jr. This was Edwards's first Prestige recording, and it seems the company brass wanted to give listeners a diverse selection of material to familiarize themselves with him. So there's a blues, "Nothin' But the Truth," a gospel-influenced number, "Lovin'It, Lovin'It," a Latin piece, "Brazilian Skies," and three ballads.
Throughout, Edwards makes an attractive, solid tone, heard to best advantage on the standard "But Beautiful." Most of the time he improvises thoughtfully and relatively economically, with the rhythm section lending vigorous support. He improvises inventively as well, soloing with fine continuity during "On the Street Where You Live," putting his ideas together quite coherently, although on "Games That Lovers Play" he hews a bit too close to the theme. He's not exactly a household name, but Davis is an impressive Bud Powell-influenced soloist with fine technique and, at times, a sensitive touch. Alas, he has not yet received the credit he deserves. -
They Say...
This CD reissue is quite brief (just 32 minutes) but it does give one a pretty definitive look into the style of tenor-saxophonist Teddy Edwards. Accompanied by pianist Walter Davis Jr, guitarist Phil Orlando, bassist Paul Chambers, drummer Billy Higgins and percussionist Montego Joe, Edwards plays three of his originals plus a trio of standards. His warm tenor (alternately boppish and soulful) is heard at its best during "On the Street Where You Live" and "But Beautiful."
