A gorgeous, winsome ode to beta-male romance

  • We Say...

Back in the '90s, power-pop was almost anti-power. With choirboy vocal harmonies, skinny guitar melodies and big-sigh odes to unrequited crushes, groups like the Posies made a name for rock dudes who weren't afraid of cardigan sweaters.

Seattle's Michael Benjamin Lerner grew up listening to the Posies, and his debut sounds like a gorgeous tribute to that golden age of beta-male romance. Death Cab for Cutie guitarist Chris Walla produced, recording and mixing each song on analogue tape in a single day, and the music feels feather-light. "Awkward Kisser" floats along through gauzy guitars and perky sock-hop pianos as Lerner gets nostalgic for "cherry blossoms and a cherry soda / picnics in the countryside." And "Imaginary Friend" is a shy head-bobber, with starch-crisp chords, a simple, learn-to-play drum beat and lyrics that could have been cribbed from someone's Hello Kitty diary: "When I was young I had imaginary friends / And boy did we have fun."

Lerner's not so emo that he ignores his ambitions; with hard-charging guitars that melt into a neon-bright sunrise of a chorus, "Tokyo" is a vivid rock-star fantasy conceived on a bullet train — the perfect daydream for a sensitive guy with enough stadium-rocking drive to become big in Japan.
