  • They Say...

The material on this CD had frequently appeared on Everest back in the LP era. Best are three selections featuring the great tenor-saxophonist Sonny Rollins ("Sonnymoon for Two," "Like Someone in Love" and the "Theme from Tchaikovsky's Symphony Pathetique"). Also on this fine budget set are a selection apiece from trombonists J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding, and performances from several mid-'50s sessions by cornetist Thad Jones including two numbers with bassist Charles Mingus, a quintet set with tenor-saxophonist Frank Foster and "The Jones Bash" which features six unrelated musicians all of whom have Jones as their last name. This bop sampler has its strong moments.
