  • We Say...

That Ghost is the working name of hyper-prolific, eighteen year old Ryan Schmale; Young Fridays is his fourth release. The sound of That Ghost is aggressively lo-fi — distorted, clattering drums, sung-through-a-tin-can vocals, dime-store acoustic guitar rattle. It sounds like young Schmale locked himself in a room, strapped on a guitar and refused to come out until he'd written an album's worth of great songs. There's a simple urgency to the songs on Young Fridays. Most of the eleven tracks are a few rumbling chords and a hacked-out drum beat — it's a dizzying, but thrilling exercise to listen to the album in one sitting. Of the many standouts, "Open Windows" is the album's high point: a loping guitar and piano twinkle with Scmale's great, breezy vocal melody at its center. In the age of Garageband there are certainly a glut of bedroom pop pioneers, but few (if any) have shown the ability to create an album as consistently gripping as Young Fridays.
