  • We Say...

New York's Big Sleep bring out the sludge, dropping anvil-heavy riffage over and over and over, the kind of stuff that powered bands like Polvo and Braid and even June of 44 in the mid-90s. Big Sleep is slightly cleaner — "So Long," with it's chiming pianos and high-arcing melodies is practically anthemic — but they're just as prone to fits of knotty noodling. "Slow Race" starts with one stuttering guitar and eventually gives way to stormy-seas heaving, the whole song pitching and rolling again and again; "Bad Blood," though, is off like a rocket, moving fast enough to support pouty vocals (a rarity here) and a wiry lead guitar. Their name is a misnomer: Big Sleep is wide-eyed and ready to pounce.
