  • They Say...

The first record released by Holocene, which is the label directly associated with the Portland, OR, club of the same name, It's Important to Me to Be One Step Further Than One Step Beyond: Holocene Remix Compilation, Vol. 1 presents the same type of eclecticism that the club is known for. Label owners asked some of the city's top electronica artists (E*Rock, Toothfairy) to remix some of their favorite local indie acts (01 [Pop Music], Bobby Birdman), and the result is a nice mix of sounds, from the Anticon-esque "Twenty Cent Revolt (Talkdemonics Artists of These Instruments the Drums Remix)" to the dancy "Junesong (Spleenless Remix)" to the sweet folktronica of "On Leaving (DJ Tants Starlight Airport Remix)" to the darker IDM of "No Culture Icons (Ovian Remix)." This kind of thing has been done before, but rarely to such success on the album level. It's soft and mechanical yet somehow warm and inviting, a good and effective combination of two styles into something that still makes a lot of sense.
