A cornucopia of obscure trash rock
-
We Say...
Who would’ve guessed that the city of Fort Worth, TX would be able to spawn not just one fantastic garage rock compilation album but a grand total of three?! That's the gift that Norton Records represents to aficionados of trashy rock and roll. Since 1986, this Brooklyn label has unearthed a cornucopia of music from all corners of the trash rock universe. Most of this music has been a long-running secret among the loyal members of this underground scene and — thankfully — the good folks at Norton Records have made this music available to the masses. The Cynics kick off with a fuzz-soaked take on “Train Kept A-Rollin’” that sets the pace for the rest of this collection. The psychedelic garage genre is represented suitably by the shimmery guitar riffs of the Bard’s “Thanks a Lot Baby.” The Rising Suns’ live cover of Little Latin Lupe Lu gets just a little bit dirtier than the Mitch Ryder rendition and far out-greases the Righteous Brothers’ version. “All I Ask” by Barons, with its dashes of early Kinks, evokes Guided By Voices circa 1963. Not all of the songs on Fort Worth Teen Scene were recorded on anything resembling high fidelity, so if you seek pristine documentations for your discriminating ears, save your downloads for something else. However, those who appreciate the genre won’t care about this distinction, and will be delighted by what’s included here.
“ The indie iTunes — Hardcore music fans are migrating to eMusic, the iTunes Music Store's cheaper, cooler cousin.”
