Shimmering acoustic reworkings of classics from these criminally undersung heroes of the Paisley Underground.

That The Church are not worshiped as major rock deities on both sides of the Atlantic is an outrage: their best album, 1986's Heyday, is a dazzling essay in Byrdsian psychedelia. El Momento Descuidado, released in 2004, is an odd one, consisting substantially of acoustic reworkings of old Church songs. For some, this isn't that much of a stretch -- minor 1988 hit "Under The Milky Way" was originally built upon shimmering 12-string. For others, especially Heyday cut "Tristesse" and the early Australian hit "The Unguarded Moment," the transformation is more dramatic, but reveals the strength of the songwriting at The Church's core. "Almost With You," still the best REM song REM never wrote, sounds fantastic in any setting. The five new tracks are reflective of a band that are still searching, still questing, still capable of provoking wonder and bewilderment.
