Washington, D.C.’s Country Gentlemen were in the vanguard of bluegrass’ second generation, broadening the music’s appeal to citified audiences with a deft blend of wide-ranging material, solid picking, inspired singing, urbane wit and sometimes zany stage antics. Though city boy mandolinist John Duffey and banjo phenom Eddie Adcock left strong stamps on the group — especially Duffey’s ear for bluegrass obscurities and out-of-the-box material from the likes of Bob Dylan — the constant figure throughout the Gents’ history was Charlie Waller, whose lead singing refracted the influence of his idol, Hank Snow, through a sensibility shaped by the first generation of bluegrass greats. The retrospective 25 Years includes many of the Gentlemen’s most popular numbers from both the classic Duffey-Adcock years and later editions of the band that featured such luminaries as Doyle Lawson and banjo great Bill Emerson.

25 Years was released in 1980, when the Country Gentlemen were celebrating their 25th anniversary. The compilation covers the group's recordings for Rebel Records, which began in the mid-'60s. Over the course of 25 Years, various incarnations of the Country Gentlemen are displayed. Each one has its own merits, but the the classic lineup of Eddie Adcock, John Duffey, Tom Gray and Charlie Waller does stand out in particular. Though the other incarnations aren't quite as accomplished as this lineup, the compilation nevertheless remains an excellent purchase and introduction, since it gives a fine overview of the group's career.
