  • They Say...

The Florida darkwave/goth rock outfit the Crüxshadows make exquisite beauty on their third album, The Mystery of the Whisper. Released on Dancing Ferret, The Mystery of the Whisper marks the band's most honest and tangible release since the limited-edition EP Until the Voices Fade. Frontman Rogue is classically melodic and equally embryonic, playing into elements of Egyptian mythology on tracks such as album opener "Isis & Osiris (Life/Death)" and "Aten-Ra." The Crüxshadows are fans of new wave pioneers such as Duran Duran, the Eurythmics, and the Pet Shop Boys. Incorporating their fondness for such lush synth pop, they also mix in their goth rock influences Bauhaus to derive several dazzling dance tracks such as "Cruelty" and "Heaven's Gaze." Rogue's deep brooding is eerily similar to Talk Talk's Mark Hollis on "Leave Me Alone." The band, however, take time out to simmer down, making their ballad tracks -- "Sympathy (For Tomorrow)," "Even Angels Fall" -- just as alluring. Unlike their mainstream counterpart Marilyn Manson, the Crüxshadows heavily play into their passionate lyrical intensity. The seascapes are divinely hollow and gaping like fellow goth artists VNV Nation, Covenant, and Faith & the Muse. Darkwave is sheer and glossy once again.
