They Say...
Drawing almost exclusively from the singer's superb canon of songs recorded for Niney "The Observer" Holness during the roots age, Dennis Brown Collection: 20 Magnificent Hits is indeed stuffed with magnificent music. Most of these numbers were indeed hits, although several are better known under other titles. Brown's masterful "Here I Come," for instance, is listed here as "Live Up Rasta Children," while "We'll Weep No More" was released as a Jamaican single under the title "Take a Trip." A wealth of classics can be found here -- "Africa," "Westbound Train," "Cassandra," "So Long" (here with the elongated title "So Long Rastafari Call You"), and "Blood Sun" (again extended into "Keep Away from the Blood Sun"). There's a handful of hits produced by others, such as Brown's smash Jamaican cover of "Silhouettes" cut for Derrick Harriott, and his self-produced "Party Time" (retitled "We're Having a Party"). Brown unleashed a deluge of phenomenal records during the '70s, and this set merely scratches the surface. Still, the bulk of the tracks are crucial numbers, with only "Deceiving Girl" terribly out of place. That's not because it's a bad song -- it's actually a very good one -- but it dates from the mid-'80s and Brown's split Judge Not album, and thus is sorely out of place stylistically. Perhaps it's meant as a reminder that the singer's career carried on apace well beyond the roots age. In any case, this is an excellent set, and easily lives up to its title.
