Urban paranoia, leopard men and despots in the parking lot: the Dirtbombs let loose.

  • We Say...

Up to this point, Dirtbombs albums have been self-contained exercises in theme: the dirty garage debut of Horndog Fest, the scuzzy soul covers of Ultraglide in Black, the glammy burst of Dangerous Magical Noise; with We Have You Surrounded, though, Collins and co. stretch out to allow some stylistic dabbling. Originally intended to be an EP based on graphic novelist Alan Moore's "Leopard Man at C&A," the project grew in scope as recording rolled on. The avowed theme is "urban paranoia," and you can hear cues both lyrically ("despots in the parking lot") and sonically (scraped chords, squealing feedback); this shorthand, though, doesn't reflect the true breadth of musical ideas let loose on Surrounded.

The traditional Dirtbombs sonic stew holds steady here (fuzz bass, doubled drums, scratchy Dave Davies-esque guitar solos), but there's no longer a lock-step adherence to maximum R&B modes: the Sparks cover "Sherlock Holmes" is startlingly minimal with a simple thump and single, ringing fuzzed bass notes; eight-minute-long "Race to the Bottom" is a bewildering, squalling sound collage; and album closer "La Fin du Monde" finds Collins confidently crooning in French over chiming guitars. Not all of the stylistic leaps on Surrounded work, but it's undeniably thrilling to hear a singular talent like Collins reach for it.
