We Say...
Surfer dude anthems crossed with the minor-keyed melodrama of Joy Division — it's an unlikely combination to say the least. And yet it works beautifully on the Drums' debut EP, "Summertime!", six distinct indie pop songs held together by restless hooks, airtight production values and a carpe diem attitude that cuts through every last trace of melancholia.
A Brooklyn-based buzz band that isn't draping their songs in distortion and no-fi nastiness, you say? Indeed; and it's refreshing as hell, reminding us of when it was rad to rip off the Smiths and the Cure, not drag your first proper release through a four-alarm fire. Take "Submarine," for instance. Built upon galloping grooves, distant banshee wails and the-need-to-let-her-go, it'll make you reach for your nearest copy of Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me. Not because of its blasphemous Robert Smith references; because it — like most of "Summertime!" — makes you appreciate the Drums' unfiltered influences almost as much as they do. That goes for everything from the schoolyard chants and soda shop nods of "Let's Go Surfing" to the merry elevator music melodies and snippy call-and-response choruses of "Don't Be a Jerk, Jonny."
If this is indeed the Drums' imaginary soundtrack to "the saddest summer ever," we've got one thing to say: keep the heartbreak coming, guys.
