The greatest classic blues singer of all.

  • We Say...

At a time when blues was a vocal art, Bessie Smith was the greatest classic blues singer of all. Though every bit as boisterous as her reputation suggests, Bessie brought great subtlety and nuance to her powerhouse voice. She worried every word she sang, her phrasing and intonation squeezing out every possible drop of meaning. Backed initially by a solo pianist and then by jazz bands, she used that darkly blue voice like another instrument, sliding, slurring, moaning, growling, crying, scatting and swinging through a stunning range of material such as “Back Water,” “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” “I Need a Little Sugar in My Bowl” and “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out.”
