  • They Say...

After years of novelty and comedy records, the Four Preps made a completely serious album, How to Succeed in Love (If You're Really Trying). The low-key instrumental setting spotlights the group's harmonies like never before on songs like "Put Your Head on My Shoulder," "Lollipops and Roses," and "You Are My Special Angel." Two French-language songs underscore the gravity of the affair, but the album's highlight is a moody arrangement of the Ketty Lester hit "Love Letters." This isn't the style of music for which the Four Preps are known (although they often tossed in a serious song or two on their earlier albums), but it was probably seen in its day as a welcome antidote to the increasing silliness of their "campus" albums.
