A great introduction to American gospel music in the 1950s and 1960s.

  • We Say...

Soul music, we are constantly reminded, is the melding of the vocal techniques of gospel with the subject matter and instrumental techniques of rhythm and blues, which is why it's a shame more reissues of this music haven't been made. With the exception of their discovery of the Staple Singers, the Vee-Jay label didn't develop talent in the gospel field, preferring to take artists whose careers were in decline and try to revive them, often successfully. But these artists were hardly in decline when they recorded for Vee-Jay. The Swan Silvertones, Highway Q.C.s and the all-star Caravans were still perfectly capable of wrecking the house when they appeared on a gospel program, and this collection is a fine introduction to American gospel music in the 1950s and 1960s. From such familiar tunes as "Jesus Loves Me" and "Rock of Ages" to Marion Williams' bravura "Let Jesus Lead You" to Alex Bradford's remake of his immortal "Too Close," this is great stuff.
