  • They Say...

The Loved Ones' lineup is built from the ranks of hardcore outfits like Kid Dynamite (bassist Michael Cotterman) and Trial by Fire (drummer Mike Sneeringer). But as led by the triumphant rasp and ringing guitar chords of Dave Hause, the trio's self-titled, five-song Jade Tree debut is more a mix of square-shouldered, revivalist street punk and straightforward hooks. "100K," "Chicken," and "Candy Cane" are melodic dynamos of familiar chords, shoutalong breakdowns, and lyrics that lament and celebrate the hard life, while the less immediate "Massive" has a probing bassline that reaches back to early-'90s indie. It's a brief introduction to the Loved Ones, and doesn't suggest a lot of innovation in their future. But music like this doesn't have to innovate so much as it keys a release, and in that sense Hause's songs succeed. Fans of the Alkaline Trio and Good Riddance take note.
