  • We Say...

John Gary Williams' fragile, extremely high tenor was the prime ingredient that sparked the doo-wop-tinged Mad Lads' music. Though Julius Green, Robert Phillips and William Brown were also good singers, it's Williams' piercing yet distinctive voice that made such songs as "I Want a Girl" and "Don't Have to Shop Around," among others, so memorable. This disc gathers most of their hits and shows that Stax's producers were also capable of churning out quality vocal ensemble numbers.

  • They Say...

Career-spanning disc of material recorded between the mid-'60s and early '70s, including the hits "Don't Have to Shop Around," "I Want Someone, " and "I Want a Girl, " as well as more modern-styled cuts from the late '60s and early '70s. Good second-division soul, although it's missing their 1968 hit "Whatever Hurts You."
