They Say...
Launched in 1973 by brothers Ernest and Joseph Hookim (they also engineered and produced), Channel One became one of the key studios during the roots, rockers, and early dancehall years. Using the Hookims' ace studio band, the Revolutionaries -- Sly & Robbie, organist Ansel Collins, tenor saxophonist Tommy McCook, et al. -- producer Bunny Lee cut a good chunk of his sides at Channel One, including many found on this fine Heartbeat sampler. Along with classics by the Mighty Diamonds (a version of the Chi-Lites' "Stoned Out of My Mind") and Black Uhuru (Marley's "Sun Is Shining"), the disc features fine vocals by Horace Andy and Ernest Wilson, more harmony cuts from the Wailing Souls and the Meditations, a DJ track by Ranking Trevor (a reworking of the Techniques' classic "Queen Majesty"), and a taste of the Revolutionaries' instrumental work. Without any sides by important Channel One artists like John Holt, Dillinger, and Barry Brown, though, this compilation isn't so much a solid overview of the studio's output as it is an enjoyable way to get your feet wet.
