They Say...
Though the Organ broke up in late 2006, the group reunited a little over a year later to record the handful of tracks that would have appeared on their second album, had they survived long enough to finish it. Thieves finds the Organ's music evolving even after the fact -- these songs are quieter and more contemplative than nearly anything on Sinking Hearts or Grab That Gun. "Even in the Night" opens the EP with the Organ's trademark namesake drones, but even when Katie Sketch sings about dreaming of drowning children, the song is oddly soothing. Thieves' production is cleaner and more direct than the band's previous work, highlighting Sketch's haunting voice and melodies. Both of those shine on "Oh What a Feeling" and especially "Let the Bells Ring," where Sketch's deadpan croon and the jangly guitars surrounding it sound more Smiths-like than ever. Though all of the EP has a sense of finality to it, that feeling is strongest on "Fire in the Ocean," which sets a failed relationship free with the refrain "Who will love me like the ocean does?" "Don't Be Angry" ends Thieves on a gentler note, its acoustic guitars and Sketch's fragile singing pointing the way toward her post-Organ project, Mermaids. Some of the Organ's prettiest and most mature moments are tucked away here, and Thieves plays like a fitting wake for the band.
