  • They Say...

It certainly doesn't take much for a band to get a tribute album in 1999. Sure, it's still the province of "legendary" bands, which usually means a group that's been kicking around for about 15 years, but even spring chickens like Sepultura can be saluted by their peers. And why not? Sepultura was certainly among the hardest and best of their breed, regardless of what mainstream critics might say. It might be a little silly that they're given a tribute like World of Pain: Tribute to Sepultura in 1999, but this is undoubtedly a good way to introduce Sepultura's fans to bands that sound a lot like Sepultura. That's the primary strength of World of Pain. There are certainly no revelations -- most bands ape Sepultura's sound -- but there's not anything bad about it, either. Subtle differences in arrangement will be of interest to hardcore fans, and fans of the featured bands will likely enjoy these performances, but by and large, it should be seen as an introductory sampler, presenting legions of similar-sounding bands to Sepultura fans -- those that can find this independent tribute, that is.
