Lovestruck California duo takes to the dance floor

  • We Say...

"I feel electric," coos Simone Rubi on the infectious first single from the California duo Rubies' shimmering debut album. Add some synthetic beats and a few hand claps, and her sentiment becomes a directive: report to the dancefloor, immediately! Sure, Rubi and bandmate Terri Lowenthal have the chops to make indie kids rock out, but don't be fooled by their ultra-cool artsy facade. Much like their pal Leslie Feist, who contributes vocals to "I Feel Electric," the ladies of Rubies know how to temper their arch, sophisticated vibes with an endearing dose of vulnerability.

Rubies' lyrics have the googly-eyed feel of a middle-school love letter, all dandelions and oceans and mountains and summer and songs punctuated with "my darling" and "my precious." Take the opening lines of the wistful ballad, "Turquoise": "Your smile beams like sunlight on a gull's wing/ And the leaves dance and play after/ Take my hand and hold it as you would a flower." This stuff is undeniably lovey-dovey, but Rubies owns its earnestness. As the record shifts from electro-pop to funk-tinged disco ("Signs of Love" could be a lost Bee Gees jam) to mellow folk and back again with remarkable ease, a dreamy sweetness serves to unify each gorgeously arranged song. Even as they inspire bliss on the dance floor, it's a refreshing pleasure to see Rubies forego the hipster trappings of irony and attitude in favor of lovesick melodies, breezy vocals and unabashed sincerity.
