First album without Yo Yo Ma, the Silk Road still shines

  • We Say...

The Silk Road Ensemble was formed by cellist Yo Yo Ma in 1998 as a kind of musical exchange between East and West. The rotating cast has included some of the finest musicians from the traditions of China, India, Iran, and the West, and has spawned a number of other groups — most notably perhaps the string quartet known as Brooklyn Rider. Now, the ensemble has recorded for the first time without Yo Yo Ma, and moved away musically from the countries of the old Silk Road. The album may be called Off the Map, but they have not lost their way.

Gabriela Lena Frank, the gifted Peruvian-American composer, offers a set of three Andean-inspired pieces built around the sound of the pipa, the Chinese lute played by Wu Man. It shouldn’t work, but it does. Wu Man and Indian tabla player Sandeep Das join Brooklyn Rider in a work by Evan Ziporyn, best known for his work with Indonesian music and with Bang On A Can; and Hong Kong-born Angel Lam‘s combination of Japanese bamboo flute, marimba, strings and percussion is particularly evocative. Perhaps the highlight of the album though is Osvaldo Golijov’s “Air To Air,” drawing on melodies from the Christian Arab, Sardinian, and Mexican music — all tunes he’s used before, but here woven into a wildly colorful suite that serves almost as an analog “remix” of his earlier piece “Ayre.”
