Classics from the Quattro Fromaggi pizza of 1970’s soul.

We Say...
The Stylistics were the Quattro Fromaggi pizza of 1970’s soul — none more cheesy. While every other dude in America seemingly was out hustlin’, groovin’ and disco-dancin’ in dancefloor ecstasy, this quintet cranked their thang horizontally, oozing 12 strings-soaked, mostly balladic hits onto Billboard’s Easy Listening chart — hence a late-career hook-up with Burt Bacharach.
Their best-known stuff arrived early, though, during the timespan of this comp. Then, they were amongst the big-hitters of Philly Soul, under the tutelage of producer Thom Bell, who’d formerly worked his gloopy magic on the Delfonics. As well as mastery of blissfully soothing orchestral arrangements, Bell had another winning ingredient — the falsetto of chief Stylistic, Russell Thompkins Jr., who cherubically wooed chocolate-box-craving womenfolk, couched in breathy harmonies from his four cohorts. He made Barry White seem pushy, hyperactive.
Bell’s co-writer and lyricist, Sandy Creed, had a knack for laying out simple romantic ideas in the verses, which came to lovin’ fruition in soaring, orgasmic choruses such as "I’m Stone in Love With You" and "Let’s Put It All Together," almost leaving no argument against the wonders awaiting in sexual union. "You Make Me Feel Brand New" even presents the possibility of perpetual rebirth in the sack. As mack anthems, or make-out soundtracks, these tunes are close to flawless, unimpeachable.
Despite their Afro’s and retina-scorchingly bad-ass lounge attire, they rarely upped the tempo, at least not on 45, apart from on "Rockin’ Roll Baby," where the target of sugary affecion isn’t a honey, but a two-year-old toddler, who can apparently rock with the best of ’em. Hmm.
Thanks, no doubt, to their (apparent!) wholesomeness, Thompkins & co haven’t been totemized as much as their mid-’70s funkateer peers. However, "You’re a Big Girl Now" will be instantly recognisable to anyone hip to Ghostface Killah’s "Big Girl," while "Betcha By Golly, Wow!" has been covered by both Prince and the UK’s Sugababes. Awlriiiiiight! -
They Say...
Any of their collections are good, but this one features their biggest and best hits, including "I'm Stone in Love with You," "Rockin' Roll Baby, " "Betcha by Golly Wow," and "You Make Me Feel Brand New."
