  • They Say...

Super adorable girl-punk combo the Unlovables debut with a quasi-concept album neatly summed up by its sequential title. Singer/songwriter Hallie Bullit has just the kind of pleasantly untrained, enthusiastic girl-next-door vocals that can put across lyrics like "Do you know how rad today is?/It is super-rad times infinity!" and "Bein' in love is a pain in the ass," the two lines that most succinctly sketch the album's emotional poles. Musically, the trio plays bubblegum punk at its most endearingly bubblegummy, with producer/engineer Mass Giorgini -- the undisputed king of bubblegum punk -- balancing the crunchy guitars and pure pop hooks perfectly. The perfect summertime album, unapologetically sunshiny even on songs like "Feelin' All Emo (Since I Broke Up with You)," Crush Boyfriend Heartbreak is a no-brainer for fans of that dog., the Mr. T Experience, the Go-Go's, and the Kay Hanley-led Josie and the Pussycats soundtrack.
