July 2004's version of Punk Rock Is Your Friend (it's Vol. 5, if you must know) launches with two killer tracks from fresh label signees and classicist hardcore screamers Underminded, as well as the God Awfuls, whose "Watch It Fall" was a highlight of their debut, Next Stop Armageddon. Out of left field come two previously unreleased electronic remixes from Japan's Shingo. While the Vandals' "Lord of the Dance" has some quirky charm, it's the mix of Tsunami Bomb's "Roundabout" that really shines, as it highlights the versatility of Bomb vocalist Agent M. Live cuts culled from Kung-Fu's Show Must Go Off DVD series feature types like the Adolescents, Pistol Grip, and the Matches. Other highlights include tracks from veteran punks Stiff Little Fingers (the incredible, we'll-show-you-how-it's-done selection "Guitar & Drum") and No Use for a Name, who contribute "This Ain't No Way to Live." That last track is taken from the soundtrack to the Kung-Fu-produced spoof film Cakeboy, dialog blurbs from which are sprinkled throughout Punk Rock Is Your Friend. They're funny -- "'Per diem' is a Latin term meaning 'one dollar a day'" -- and whoever the dude is, his delivery's a lot like Jack Black's. All in all a solid label comp, with bonus video content to boot.
