  • They Say...

A fitting subtitle for this collection might be A Secret History of the Pentagons, as it follows Los Angeles producer Lee Silver and various members of the obscure vocal group from their brush with fame in the early '60s through a host of names in that decade and the next. The journey here is largely a trend-oriented one, as early incarnations (as the Themes, the Chesterfields, and the Pentagons) still hold hints of doo wop/R&B sweetness and the mid- and late-'60s sides (by the Vines, Minnie Jones, 21st Century, and the Jones Brothers) give way to Motown rhythms and arrangements, all held together by rich string-accented production from Silver. Given the tendency to follow trends, the '70s sides by Soul Patrol, Nathan Williams, and (again) the Jones Brothers are surprisingly reserved, with only occasional percussion flourishes suggesting their origin -- true diamonds of '60s soul. The notes, as with many of Kent's releases, are gushing, and in this case it seems like Lee Silver deserves the praise.
