They Say...
Those with children of a certain age are probably already familiar with the Wiggles, an Australian quartet who are basically the Beatles for the preschool set. The comparison is not quite as outlandish as that sounds, because on Here Comes the Big Red Car, as on their earlier albums, the songs have a maturity of composition and arrangement that's far beyond what most other artists in their genre are doing. This is a slightly roundabout way of saying that although the Wiggles' lyrics will never be mistaken for Elvis Costello's (the title track is extremely insistent on the importance of wearing one's seat belt), the poppy, catchy tunes are melodically sturdy and interestingly arranged. In other words, when the kids want to play this album five times in one afternoon, it'll be considerably less annoying than the average children's music album of weedy acoustic guitar or characterless, rinky-dink synths.
