  • We Say...

On Top of the Tots, worldwide kid sensations the Wiggles deliver a happy mix of pop-flavored tunes with danceable beats and sweet life lessons. The Australian quartet was created by former rock bandmates (the Cockroaches) who happened to be certified preschool teachers. The slick production quality matches the best of any adult DC, and the Wiggles use a variety of musical genres to grab young listeners: "Bricklayer's Song" rocks a reggae beat; moms will enjoy the Dixieland sweetness of "Pickin' Flowers" while kids learn the word "botanist."

The Wiggles de-mystify a trip to the doctor with a boogie-woogie beat on "Say Aah at the Doctors," and drive home the "brush and floss" lesson with the twangy Southern rock of "Open Wide Look Inside at the Dentist." Punster parents will appreciate song titles like "Knead Some Dough" ('60's rock teaches breadmaking) and the waltz-time "Lettuce Sing (Fresh Fruit and Veggies)," while kids taste good nutrition information. "New York Firefighter" and "Can You Dig It" celebrate occupations kids love. While the bright, upbeat pace of Top of the Pops makes it a bad choice for sleepytime listening, this CD is a delightful daytime companion for little ones.

  • They Say...

It's another lighthearted collection of well-made children's music from the Wiggles. The Australian combo is quite skilled at writing songs simplistic enough for kids to follow, but with enough depth that they don't dull the brains of adults. Top of the Tots features the usual spoken song introductions, and Murray Cook, Jeff Fatt, Anthony Field, and Greg Page are in a rambunctious mood, calling to each other midsong. Musically, Tots is a rousing set of breezy piano-led, harmony-drenched pop/rock. "Central Park New York" has a sort of South Pacific lilt, and contains the classic line "G'day squirrels!"; "Fly Through the Sky" and "Feeling Chirpy" channel the bold bubblegum of Ohio Express or Starland Vocal Band; and "New York Firefighter" could be indie darlings the Lucksmiths. This is what makes the Wiggles and Top of the Tots so enjoyable. Sure, the songs are goofy ("We love to work all day/Laying bricks the brickie way," from "The Bricklayers Song"). But the songwriting is strong, varied, and relatively adventurous for children's music. Other topics covered on Top of the Tots include gardening, cowboys, going to the doctor, kneading dough, and walking on the moon; a full lyric sheet is included.
